Celestina Dreams

“When the Lord brought back the captive ones to Zion
We were like those who dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter
And our tongues with joyful shouting …
The Lord has done great things for us;
We are glad”

Psalm 126:1-4

As Solomon’s Porch has been building Celestina’s new home these last months it’s been amazing to be around Celestina. Except for an occasional bride to be or a mom awaiting the birth of her first born child, I’ve never seen anyone filled with such a sense of joyful expectation and peaceful otherworldliness as I’ve seen in Celestina. It has not always been this way.

Celestina was twice widowed with six children when I first met her.  At that time her children were sick and lifeless with the four oldest no longer attending school. The family lived in a falling down adobe house, half of it barely habitable in the rainy season when the floors turned to mud. That was the good side as the other half the house was unusable. Also they lived on the side of a mountain in a very steep, dangerous, isolated place. This was when Mercedes met Celestina in the market place in Panajachel.

Celestina was so taken by Mercedes personal story and the ministry of Christ, (through the ladies of La Casa de La Paz) she quickly became a regular attender, even though getting to a meeting took an hour and a half one way often with the return trip happening in the dark. She even did this in the rainy season for over a year…(Con’t)   (Celestina Continued) …and a half before she asked the big question, “Can we have a meeting in Monte Mercedes where I live? I believe many will come if we do.” Mercedes and Gloria were happy to help. In the beginning there were only two other women but last week there were 15 moms gathered when I visited not including Mercedes and Gloria. I’m amazed at how quickly Celestina’s faith, hope and love have grown and overflowed into the lives of others. I’m again reminded of the rest of Psalm 126…

“Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting.
He who goes to and fro weeping, carrying his bag of seed,
Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing
his sheaves with him”
