Insight Into the Meetings

Curious as to how meetings as La Casa de Paz go?  Read below to find out!

WE are a fellowship of friends of alcoholics who gather together for mutual support and encouragement. Those who suffer from other forms of abusive family relationships have also been drawn to our fellowship. We are great full to have them join with us. We recognize God’s generosity with us by gratefully extending to others the keys to recovery we know to be personally true in our own lives. Our clear faith and hope is that all who enter our doors will be greatly encouraged in the comfort of the Holy Spirit and that they will never have to feel alone or misunderstood again. In our heavenly father’s mansion there are many rooms and there is a special place for you. Jesus will show you the way and be your tour guide of His house. (John 14:1-6)

Our history and experience is that in faith with God, the road to healing and quality recovery is very real and possible. We believe that in Jesus Christ those who honestly seek will find in Him, all the grace, wisdom and power needed to lead clear minded, tranquil, undistracted lives. Peace of mind is one of God’s greatest gifts for us. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you might find peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) In the Lord Jesus Christ is our serenity.

The organizing principles of our meetings are also in the person of Jesus Christ, in what he does and says, “Where two or three are gathered in My name so am I in the midst of them. (Matt.18:20) It is our experience that when we put Christ at the center of our personal lives, (and this fellowship) all things work together for good. ‘We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those called according to His purpose.”(Romans 8:28) If we ever find the peace of God no longer ruling in our hearts or fellowship it is because human ambition has become central and no longer Christ.

The only authority we have is to build on another up and not tear one another down. To this end we have but one ultimate authority, that of a loving God who deeply cares and loves each one of us, and desires we love one another even as he loves us. The gift of grace is not an intellectual teaching to be possessed, but a living reality that can only be really known in giving it away. “Even as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you that My joy may be in you, that your joy may be full. (John15:9-11)  We have a saying, “If you want to keep it, you need to give it away”. God gives power not for our selfish use, but to be given away and see others healed and set free.

The focus of our meetings is a simple group fellowship or therapy organized around a biblically based 12 step program. We don’t teach we share. Jesus said, “Don’t be called teacher for One is your teacher and you are all brothers.” (Matt. 23:8) We are not a professional program or are we led by experts or professionals. Jesus said, “I praise you O Father of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed the to infants. Yes Father for this was well pleasing in your sight” (Luke 10:21) We believe in the end, how much we knew will not matter as much as how well we’ve loved and obeyed the things God has given us to do.

Our leaders are but trusted servants, they don’t govern but serve in moderating our meetings and keeping our program organized and focused. “Don’t be called leaders; for one is your Leader, that is Christ. But the greatest among you shall be called servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. (Matt. 23:10-12) The power and authority of our program is that it really works. The words of Christ when honestly sought, work with amazing results because His words are uniquely powerful, filled with spirit and life (John6:63) for us who honestly seek and believe in Him. There is no need for anyone to pressure anyone else, there is no need to have any one be lord over anyone else, or to be lorded over. Everything we do is done in freedom and voluntarily, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty.” (2Cor.3:17) This does not mean we give opportunity for the flesh.

While we are not a professional program we are, by the grace of God a gifted fellowship, called to “serve one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (1Peter 4:10) We are learning to receive our gifts from God with an open hand knowing that God’s graces are only real when they’re  given away. Our healing in Christ starts here when we share our lives with others. “Now there are  varieties of gifts but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries but the same Lord. There are varieties of effects but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good, helping, serving, the word of faith, the word of wisdom, miracles, healing, etc. (1Cor.12 and Romans12:3-8)

We have no opinions on issues outside our fellowship, about politics, money, religious denominations, doctrines or any other thing. The single requirement of our fellowship is a desire to be set free from every form of abuse experienced in a family setting. Our ministry speaks to a very specific need and there are a multitude of issues our fellowship does not address. Beyond the ministry of La Casa de Paz,  we  encourage our members to be actively engaged in their local church.

The quality and effectiveness of our program depends on group unity. Gossip breaks that unity and greatly effects our freedom to be open in sharing with one another. While our sharing is open and honest we keep away from specific details of any kind. “What we say here stays here.”

Our outreach is to those who have suffered in similar ways we have. It is based upon personal attraction, not media promotion. Word of mouth is our most effective form of outreach.

If you find this little book helpful then please use it in the best manner you see fit. If Christ is central good fruit should be born from it. The house of peace is first of all a simple hope and faith that as children of God it is our rightful inheritance  to live lives of tranquility, reconciled with God and all of creation free of want. Secondly The House of Peace is the title of a book and not a formal organization as such. Every group is independent and responsible before God as to their success.

As far as organizing a group, be organized as little or as much as you would you think best. Because we are purposely unprofessional, formal structure while important is not our main point of consideration. “The goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.” (1 Timothy 1:5) You can name your group in whatever way would personally encourage you the most or have your meetings as a part of your churches educational program if your pastor approves and that works best.

Generally there are three types of meetings, 1.Therapy or group discussion, 2Business Meetings, and 3. Study Meetings, on the gospels and the 12 steps. Normally there are three positions, 1 Secretary, 2. Treasurer, of collections for the destitute and coffee for meetings etc. 3.Coordinator for group discussions and studies.
